about
This last SXSW my buddy Bruce Hughes asked me to be a part of a songwriting group where one gets a prompt on Thursday morning and you have to submit a song to the group by the following Wednesday night.
It was LATE this past Sunday May 1st and I knew I only had one available day with my producer & engineer, Patrick Herzfeld, at Signal Hill Recording and that was the next morning on Monday. I hummed some melodies and scribbled out some words relating to the prompt "look no further" as I was getting in the shower after a day of yard work. I almost fell completely asleep right after that to wake up in a panic around 3 AM realizing I hadn't done anything for the session the next day.
I put on my jean shorts and went out to our dark, silent living room where all my instruments were and picked up the mandolin. After strumming some chords I took a big swallow of tequila and ventured out into my cluttered garage, where I stayed, until about 4:30 AM and had myself what I considered a pretty good chorus and about a verse and a half done.
I was inspired by all the things I want to tell my twin daughters whenever they are upset about something or feeling overwhelmed. That feeling morphed into what I would want to tell my entire family when tragedy strikes, regrets settle in or ones heart is heavy with guilt. The next day in the studio when I finished the second verse my mind was on how the message and lyrics of the song should and could be directed at literally all people for everyone.
All of us need to be mindful of how all we have is now. Yesterday is gone and the future is somehow 'make believe'.
I shot all of this footage with my phone on a mic stand to capture the making of this song and had almost an hour of footage to whittle down to four minutes.
I think it came out pretty neat.

lyrics
LOOK NO FURTHER
Little one
Close yer eyes &
Try to think about
good things
Let everything
that is wrong
Be gone like yesterday
Love the ones
who love you back
and the ones that don’t
the same
Never forget
to save yerself a little bit
for your own along the way
Look No Further
Than what is right ahead
Cause you got
everything you need
In the palms of your hands
No need to worry
About what’s done
and in the past
Since the future
is make believe
our dreams are all we have
Sisters & sons
You ain’t the only ones
with a heavy load to bear
So just
reach out your open hand
don’t ya know
that I care
Love the ones
who love you back
and the ones that don't
the same
Never forget to
save yerself a little bit
for your own along the way
Look No Further
Than what is right ahead
Cause you got
everything you need
In the palms of your hands
No need to worry
About what’s done
and in the past
Since the future
is make believe
our dreams are all we have
